Tom Cruise is back for one last (eighth) mission as IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Picture: Paramount Pictures)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The new \u2013 allegedly last-ever \u2013 Mission: Impossible film<\/a> – is an absolutely wild ride, from its jaw-dropping stunts to its unwieldy script.<\/p>\n

If this truly is the final mission for Tom Cruise<\/a>\u2019s Ethan Hunt and his IMF team<\/a>, then I doubt we\u2019ll ever see anything like this remarkable movie again<\/a>. Truly, no one is putting life and limb on the line quite like Cruise for the sake of entertainment.<\/p>\n

However, I think I want<\/em> to like Mission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning more than I actually do.<\/p>\n

The action and stunt set pieces are flawless, from Cruise diving 500 foot underwater<\/a> in arctic conditions to visit a submarine, to Cruise dangling off the wing of a biplane<\/a> 10,000 feet in the air.<\/p>\n

Heck, director Cristopher McQuarrie even throws in a classic running shot of Cruise as he races over a deserted Westminster Bridge, no big deal, despite that being the headline sequence that wowed in 2002\u2019s 28 Days Later.<\/p>\n

The Mission: Impossible films have never really taken themselves seriously, and Final Reckoning leans into the camp, self-aware comedy, such as when Hunt takes down a roomful of adversaries in brutal and gruesome fashion, which the audience experiences only through the winces and eyebrow raises of his pickpocket ally Grace (a reliably gung-ho Hayley Atwell).<\/p>\n

The Final Reckoning Tom Cruise\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.isshicare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_250962623-b43b.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning picks up where the last film left off (Picture: Paramount\/Alamy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s a deliberate gag, but sometimes the dialogue \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/07\/06\/mission-impossible-stars-admit-stress-of-working-without-a-script-19075949\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">always taking a second seat to the stunts<\/a>, as freely admitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/06\/23\/tom-cruise-and-mission-impossible-director-never-formally-introduced-19002224\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tight-knit collaborators McQuarrie and Cruise<\/a> \u2013 is so basic, clunky and on the nose that it\u2019s funny by accident.<\/p>\n<p>The same could be said for the actual plot too, as Hunt and his team race to stop vague villain Gabriel (Esai Morales) from obtaining the full power of AI baddie \u2018the Entity\u2019, in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/01\/19\/mission-impossible-7-roasted-film-title-change-months-release-20141918\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a continuation of Dead Reckoning\u2019s storyline<\/a>. All you really need to understand though is the stakes are higher than ever \u2013 again \u2013 and Hunt is the only man able to save the world (again).<\/p>\n<section class=\"metro-comment-cta\">\n<div class=\"metro-comment-cta__inner\"><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text-wrap\"><title>Comment now<\/title><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text\">Are you going to see Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning?<\/span><\/span><a class=\"metro-comment-cta__button\" href=\"#metro-comments-container\">Comment Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>And that\u2019s pretty helpful when it\u2019s somewhat difficult to reorient yourself in the narrative between flashbacks and where we are now for the first 30 minutes or so.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"270\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23092016 lazyload\" alt=\"GRABS FROM TRAILER Mission: Impossible ? The Final Reckoning | Official Trailer (2025 Movie) - Tom Cruise\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.isshicare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/SEI_246673710-c73e-e1747318614264.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>While the movie embraces silly and stunts, its script sometimes struggles (Picture: Paramount Pictures)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you have the patience for exposition though, we do also get some tongue-in-cheek ridiculousness when the team are trying to absorb Hunt\u2019s increasingly preposterous \u2018play\u2019 for his deep-sea diving mission \u2013 which relies heavily on US military submarines and the American President (Angela Bassett, on fine mouth-acting form), as well as huskies and an inflatable decompression chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Final Reckoning really returns to silly, and that\u2019s saying something for a franchise that relies on flesh-like face masks, which are of course deployed here too. There are other nice callbacks to earlier films in the franchise as well, especially with a surprise character who returns from the 1996 original film in a neat and reasonably cohesive way.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Waddingham and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/07\/severance-legend-steals-tom-cruises-thunder-400-000-000-mission-impossible-8-trailer-22866835\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Severance star Tramell Tillman<\/a> are other new standouts, understanding exactly the type of movie they are in and running with it, while <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/06\/23\/simon-pegg-shatters-illusion-hes-like-benji-in-mission-impossible-19002459\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">returners Simon Pegg<\/a> as Benji and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/07\/08\/vanessa-kirbys-moment-with-tom-cruise-that-signalled-her-mi-7-return-19079799\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pom Klementieff as ex-baddie Paris<\/a> also build a nice rapport.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"344\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23080522 lazyload\" alt=\"This image released by Paramount Pictures and Skydance shows Simon Pegg , left, and Tom Cruise in a scene from "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning." And so, obviously, he spends a fair chunk of his screen time in a tiny pair of shorts.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly 30 years making these films, it feels like the point at which Ethan Hunt starts and Tom Cruise finishes is virtually non-existent \u2013 but I\u2019m not sure that really even matters? Now more than ever, Mission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning proves Cruise is the last of a dying breed, so utterly committed as he is to his calling as a movie star to thrill audiences.
