There were times when Gary Oldman<\/a> was a heavy drinker. Now he just plays them. <\/p>\n

The iconic British actor, 67, jokes that he\u2019s in his \u2018alcoholic period\u2019, playing characters like his booze-addled screenwriter in Netflix<\/a>’s Mank and the slovenly, hard-drinking spy Jackson Lamb<\/a> in Apple TV Plus<\/a> show Slow Horses. <\/p>\n

This week he\u2019s back in cinemas in Parthenope as John Cheever, the American author who struggled with the bottle for years until he became sober aged 65.<\/p>\n

In the 90s, Oldman was just the same<\/a>, drinking two bottles of vodka a day at his peak. Did alcohol ever help him? \u2018No,\u2019 he says, firmly, when we meet. \u2018You think that it gives you an edge.\u2019 <\/p>\n

He recalls a day on 1995 film The Scarlet Letter when he drank at lunchtime and then performed a scene opposite co-star and now newly-minted Oscar winner, Demi Moore<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u2018That particular day…the devil got into me,\u2019 he sighs, mortified. \u2018Like the Baptists [say]…the devil came down!\u2019<\/p>\n

I\u2019d be dead. I know that for a fact. Things have come my way since then.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Since, he\u2019s gained three Oscar nominations \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2018\/03\/05\/oscar-winners-2018-won-gary-oldman-frances-mcdormand-7362025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and won Best Actor<\/a> for his role as British PM Winston Churchill (another boozer), as well as being a regular actor for mega-director Christopher Nolan, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/11\/22\/christopher-nolan-thinks-one-issue-may-affect-oppenheimers-oscars-19847120\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including smash hit Oppenheimer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, you have to wonder when he plays an alcoholic \u2013 like Cheever in Parthenope \u2013 is it hard to resist the temptation? <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I don\u2019t even see it,\u2019 he says. \u2018It\u2019s like another life, really. It\u2019s like a whole different person. Like I lived a whole different other life. I can go out and buy it. I can open a bottle of wine and pour you some. I have no desire to even take a sip. I had no interest at all. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018And sometimes people will say, \u201cOh, you don\u2019t mind if I ever drink?\u201d Have two! Have one for me! And he certainly doesn\u2019t seem bothered if his better half takes a drink. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018My wife occasionally likes a glass of wine. And it don\u2019t worry me. It\u2019s a miracle. It\u2019s fantastic. I mean, just because I get sober, they\u2019re not going to take booze out of the liquor store. The world is what it is. The problem\u2019s with me, not with the vodka company!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s delighted to be in Parthenope, the new film from Italian director Paolo Sorrentino \u2013 a great hero of Oldman\u2019s \u2013 who has made films like Youth and the Oscar-winning The Great Beauty. <\/p>\n<p>The feeling is clearly mutual. \u2018Gary Oldman is an actor I really adore \u2013 I love him very much,\u2019 the enthusiastic Sorrentino tells me. \u2018He\u2019s a very kind, gentle person and he can play anything. His character, Cheever, meets a young Italian woman, Parthenope, played by Celeste Dalla Porta, who has academic intentions. <\/p>\n<p>Oldman says it was fascinating playing opposite the untested Dalla Porta, even if it made him a little sad. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Fifty years of doing it, I\u2019m a veteran with experience. And Celeste is a young actress whose life will change after this film. And there\u2019s an innocence and purity that will be lost forever.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Unlike his co-star, Oldman has been through the mill. Comb through his CV and you\u2019ll find little-seen films like Sin, Dead Fish and The Unborn.  <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve had darker periods where there\u2019s the highs and then there\u2019s the lows, and you got to put the kids through school, and you got to pay the mortgage and do all of that. And you do sometimes. I\u2019ve done things that ordinarily wouldn\u2019t be on the radar. Under different circumstances, I may have said, \u2018Pass, no.\u2019 That\u2019s soul destroying.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22990581 lazyload\" alt=\"Undated film still from Parthenope. And if I see a really good actor sometimes appear in something that\u2019s a little bit dubious, I never judge. People would be quick to say, \u201cOh my God, what\u2019s he doing in that? What\u2019s she doing in that?\u201d Now, I know. And I go, \u201cOh, he just had that divorce, didn\u2019t he?\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Oldman has found a steady paycheque on TV show Slow Horses, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/12\/26\/official-best-tv-show-2024-according-rotten-tomatoes-22192248\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a gig that he \u2013 and fans \u2013 absolutely love<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Now a lot of people know that I\u2019m not available,\u2019 he says. \u2018Basically I\u2019m kind of off the market because of the show. But I like that. I like that. The only ever movie he\u2019s directed was 1997\u2019s scorching Nil By Mouth \u2013 another story of addiction, inspired by his own upbringing in South London. <\/p>\n<p>Since then, for a decade, he\u2019s tried to get a movie made about Edward Muybridge, the pioneering 19th century photographer. But the studios simply don\u2019t want to fund a movie Oldman estimates will cost $30million (\u00a322.3m).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018You go to Focus and they don\u2019t want to do it, and they say that it doesn\u2019t fit our model. But then, of course, someone else a year later is the head of Focus, and then you try again. And you go to Netflix, and then they\u2019re out, and then [there are] the new guys at Netflix. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The producer of Parthenope, Lorenzo [Mieli], read it and adored it, and he said, \u201cI long to see this movie.\u201d But people want to either give you a million dollars or $200mi (\u00a3149m).
