A \u2018beautifully imagined portrait\u2019 of the life of writer Emily Bronte is now available to watch on Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Released in 2022, the biographical drama Emily<\/a> is a part-fictionalised take on the author, best known for her only novel Wuthering Heights<\/a>, now considered a classic of English literature<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During her life Bronte, who published under the pen name Ellis Bell, also wrote a book of poetry with her sisters Charlotte and Anne titled Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell.<\/p>\n

Despite her being one of the most celebrated English authors across history, her solitary nature while she was alive has made it difficult for biographers and historians to discover more about her.<\/p>\n

It was said Emily never made any friends outside of her family and that she was unsociable and had an extremely shy nature. In 1848, at the age of 30, Bronte died from tuberculosis.<\/p>\n

However, a few years ago the film Emily, which starred Sex Education\u2019s Emma Mackey<\/a> as the titular character, sought to shine a light on her life.<\/p>\n

and currently holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with its critics consensus reading: \u2018With a bracingly irreverent approach to its story and Emma Mackey bringing Bront\u00eb vibrantly to life, Emily is a biopic that manages to feel true while taking entertaining creative liberties.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A ravishing period drama that plays fast and loose with the facts in order to paint a portrait of the author that bleeds with the same heart-in-its-hands emotionality she had to suffuse into her work,\u2019 IndieWire wrote in its review.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Led by a stunning Emma Mackey, Emily is a striking depiction of a woman embracing her individuality while crafting an iconic piece of literature,\u2019 ScreenRant wrote.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item There is great buoyancy and humour in the film,\u2019 The Independent added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Metro\u2019s review read: \u2018Unevenly paced, but ravishing to the eye, it\u2019s a movie that could be ripped from the pages of Vogue. The cinematography is sublime. Some bits work, others don\u2019t so much. But it\u2019s ambitious and almost painfully heartfelt. Less a movie and more a sensational example of Bront\u00eb fan fiction.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/08\/11\/frances-oconnor-on-her-upcoming-directorial-debut-about-emily-bronte-17162867\/\">In an interview with Metro<\/a>, director Frances O\u2019Connor said viewers shouldn\u2019t expect an historical account of Bronte\u2019s all-too-short life.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve taken inspiration from certain elements from Wuthering Heights, and also the biographies that I read, and put those pieces together to create a narrative, which is not a biopic. She died when she was 30 and yet she wrote this gargantuan piece of work and there\u2019s so much in it.
