A survey from PlayStation is asking players their thoughts on the Nintendo Switch 2, including whether they like Nintendo’s approach to pre-orders.

Nintendo’s full reveal of the Switch 2 delivered some surprise games and a dash of controversy, when it came to game prices, and it seems the company’s rivals are paying close attention.

We know hardly anything about Sony and Microsoft’s plans for the next generation, except that the latter’s will probably integrate with a separate handheld device, but the dominance of the original Switch means the Switch 2 will inevitably be a source of inspiration for both companies.

Sony has made this more obvious than usual through a new survey sent to PlayStation players, just days after the Switch 2 Direct, where it asks multiple questions about the appeal of Nintendo’s next console.

The survey, which was originally posted by InstallBase forum user Flightlessfancies on Thursday, April 3 and was later shared by insider eXtas1s, asks PlayStation players various questions about the system – including whether they’re interested in purchasing the console and what features are most enticing, including GameChat, HDR support, the Joy-Con 2’s mouse functionality, and others.

One of the questions clearly states the launch date and price of the Switch 2 (take note, Nintendo) in what comes off as an inadvertent advertisement for the console.

The most interesting question concerns Nintendo’s approach to pre-orders on the My Nintendo Store, which is locked to Nintendo Switch Online members with over 50 hours of gameplay – in a bid to prevent scalpers.

It suggests Sony is considering a similar option, so this might become a standard method across the board, at least for console manufacturers rather than independent retailers.

The whole survey suggests PlayStation is willing to crib ideas from the Switch 2 at large, depending on whether it appeals to the PlayStation audience.

Sony and Microsoft have both followed Nintendo’s lead in the past, especially around the boom of the Wii’s motion controls, but the Switch 2, weirdly, emulates some past ideas from Sony’s stable.

The console’s camera functionality with Super Mario Party Jamboree’s TV mode has distinct whiffs of the PlayStation 2’s EyeToy, which Microsoft tried to improve on with Kinect, so there’s an odd sense of recirculating ideas.

As for Sony specifically, the company might be particularly keen to investigate the Switch 2’s appeal to help develop its own handheld device – something which has been rumoured for some time.

The last proper PlayStation handheld was the PS Vita in 2011, which was a flop compared to its PSP predecessor, but Sony has seen success with its PlayStation 5 remote play accessory, the PlayStation Portal, in recent years.

Sony and Microsoft will likely continue to pay close attention to the Switch 2 over the coming months, especially when it launches on June 5, 2025.
