of <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/amazon-prime-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon Prime Video<\/a>\u2019s new action movie \u2018100% changed\u2019 the approach on set, one of its stars has said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/09\/g20-director-warns-amazon-prime-video-movie-will-change-culture-22872593\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">G20, an action thriller<\/a> in which <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/viola-davis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Viola Davis<\/a> plays the fictional American president, who must save her family, fellow world leaders and the globe when <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/g20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the summit<\/a> is hijacked by terrorists, was directed by Patricia Riggen and produced by the Oscar-winning Davis.<\/p>\n<p>And for British actor Douglas Hodge, who takes on the role of the UK prime minister, he could absolutely notice the difference \u2013 and for the better.<\/p>\n<p>The actor told <strong>Metro<\/strong> that having two women in charge \u2018100%\u2019 affected the vibe while making the film and how things were done, in his opinion.<\/p>\n<p>Smiling over his self-professed \u2018late in life\u2019 transformation into an action star having also just shot <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/12\/01\/tom-clancys-jack-ryan-series-3-trailer-sees-john-krasinski-on-the-run-17862636\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Prime Video Jack Ryan film<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/john-krasinski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Krasinski<\/a> and Sienna Miller \u2013 his second-ever role in the genre after G20 \u2013 he mused: \u2018I think there’s a sort of machismo; there’s a sort of heightening of adrenaline.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The scene [in G20] where we’re all taken hostage and the windows blow in, the tables blow up, grenades go off, people are shot, the squibs fire \u2013 even though it’s not real, there’s things smashing, there’s people screaming, you can almost never hear when they shout cut because everyone’s like, “Aaargh!” and all the guys who are the stunt men are like, this is their moment.\u2019 <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div bit more of a nurturing, caring, sort of tender environment, it’s a little bit safer,\u2019 he suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from that experience from Hodge\u2019s perspective, filmmaker Riggen also felt that her and Viola\u2019s stamp could be seen as women in the genre because they cared about the story too.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I find that sometimes action movies have a lot of action, but I don’t really care about them. In fact, you use the fight or the chase to go and get some food in the in the kitchen instead, and then it’s like, \u201cCall me when it’s over so I can follow the story again\u201d,\u2019 she revealed separately to <strong>Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In this case, I feel both Viola and I really wanted to still have a powerful story with really strong characters and moments, so that the female audience would also be engaged in the movie. So even on camera, in the film, it’s like, wow, this is pretty full-on. But then you go, okay, let’s go again. admiring of Riggen\u2019s \u2018incredible job\u2019 \u2013 \u2018I think there’s something about having a woman director\u2019 \u2013 and how she balanced an \u2018edge of your seat\u2019 action movie with a story at the centre of it \u2018about this little beautiful family\u2019, with Sutton\u2019s husband (Anthony Anderson) and two kids (Marsai Martin, Christopher Farrar) along for the ride too.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think the fact that she manipulated that and took care over that, and that each of the characters have some concern and grow and learn a bit, that\u2019s an added plus for the film.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Hodge is also here for the one-liners and self-aware humour of the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I’m sort of old school. I think the great action movies, like the Bond movies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, they all have a sort of wit. They know that you can\u2019t take yourself too seriously if you’re saying, \u201cI’m going out to save the world\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Much will be made of the fact that Davis is portraying a competent American leader on the world stage in G20, as a Black woman, when the US is yet to have a female president yet \u2013 although many thought they would ahead of November\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22873892 lazyload\" alt=\"President Danielle Sutton (Viola Davis) in G20\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.isshicare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_246795318-1ab3.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>G20 promises an ‘edge of your seat’ action film as well as a family story at the heart of it (Picture: Ilze Kitshoff\/Prime)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Riggen has been clear there was no deliberate statement made with the film \u2013 which Davis and her co-producer husband Julius Tennon had in development with others years before Donald Trump took office again \u2013 Hodge agrees that who\u2019s in the White House now does give G20 a new relevance.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Everything has a political aspect to it, and hopefully everything has a relevance. So the fact that there’s a female president [in the film], it certainly should be being talked about all the time as a possibility, no doubt about it, whoever’s the president now, and whatever isn’t the case.
