five decades has shared how he almost didn’t make his <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/90s-nostalgia\/\">iconic 90s film<\/a> that wreaked havoc at the <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/cannes\/\">Cannes Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>David Cronenberg is famed for making terrifying and stomach-churning <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/horror-movies\/\">horror films<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/03\/15\/sci-fi-horror-classic-the-fly-is-apparently-heading-for-a-big-screen-remake-without-david-cronenberg-6511385\/\">The Fly<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/04\/21\/heres-why-rachel-weiszs-role-in-dead-ringers-was-gender-swapped-18649088\/\">Dead Ringers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/06\/9-disgusting-body-horrors-need-watch-substance-22300567\/\">Videodrome<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/05\/25\/crimes-of-the-future-review-cronenberg-body-horror-is-strangely-fascinating-16705403\/\">Crimes Of The Future<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But he originally turned down helming an adaptation of J. G. Then I ran into Thomas at a film event years later – it might have been Toronto Film Festival – and said to him “I think I want to make Crash.” So it must have ruminated in my mind,’ he told press including <strong>Metro<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Crash <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/05\/24\/7-shocking-cannes-film-festival-movies-caused-walkouts-20905420\/\">premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May 1996<\/a> and polarised audiences, something that Cronenberg used to his advantage.<\/p>\n<p>‘It was Alexander Walker who said “This is a film beyond the bounds of depravity”, which I thought was a great review. I think we quoted it in the marketing.’<\/p>\n<p>He continued: ‘It’s a bit more romantic than the novel… I certainly was seduced by the beauty of my actors and the lighting that Peter Suschitzky did which was phenomenal.’<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"430\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22777849 lazyload\" alt=\"Saint Laurent Homme: Photocall - Paris Fashion Week\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.isshicare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/GettyImages-2196450894.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>The revered director said the film’s crew had ‘300 angry journalists wanting to attack them’ at Cannes when Crash screened (Picture: Stephane Cardinale – Corbis\/Corbis via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It received the Special Jury Prize when then-jury president <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/francis-ford-coppola\/\">Francis Ford Coppola<\/a> announced the award ‘for originality, for daring and for audacity.’<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about its controversy, Cronenberg remarked that when the 4K remaster of Crash was shown at the Venice Film Festival in 2019 the ‘very young audience’ was ‘not in the slightest bit scandalised.’<\/p>\n<p>‘When we showed the film at Cannes it was quite scandalous. We had 300 very angry journalists all wanting to attack us.
