Disney<\/a> has had the last laugh for its live-action remake of the studio\u2019s first-ever animated feature, Snow White<\/a>, is perhaps surprisingly one of its strongest and most worthwhile \u2018reimaginings\u2019 to date.<\/p>\n

Despite the ardent wishes of a vocal section of the online community, who have kept up fresh waves of backlash against the film<\/a> since 2001, Snow White arrives in cinemas as a movie carefully tailored and tweaked to better suit a modern audience \u2013 but without losing fundamental parts of its identity as a traditional fairy tale.<\/p>\n

Rachel Zegler<\/a>\u2019s Snow White is still the fairest of them all, but in 2025 this is more about her attitude and kindness as a princess, raised to lead her kingdom, than her looks.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also still a poisoned apple, a magic mirror on the wall, an Evil Queen (Gal Gadot<\/a>) who transforms into a hag, a magical slumber and \u2013 for better or worse \u2013 seven CGI dwarfs.<\/p>\n

West Side Story<\/a> star Zegler once again proves herself an enchanting talent with a voice to match, carefully avoiding falling into twee territory as the original Disney princess.<\/p>\n

She also beautifully showcases musical duo Pasek and Paul\u2019s new songs for the movie (even if Good Things Grow is rather too foot-stompingly Greatest Showman for this setting).<\/p>\n

href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/09\/22\/halle-bailey-responds-to-racist-backlash-over-new-little-mermaid-film-17429032\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">like Halle Bailey before her<\/a> in The Little Mermaid, Zegler\u2019s performance <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/08\/24\/how-some-disney-fans-are-treating-rachel-zegler-makes-me-sick-19380567\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">should silence those critics<\/a> (to put it kindly) who <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/14\/rachel-zegler-praised-swift-response-ignorant-snow-white-casting-comment-22731761\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saw her casting as a diversity hire<\/a> and took issue with a Latina performer portraying a character with the name Snow White.<\/p>\n<p>She carries the film, but credit should also be given to screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson for a well-judged refresh of <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/08\/14\/snow-white-doesnt-need-a-prince-just-like-women-dont-need-men-19330318\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disney\u2019s 88-year-old source material<\/a>, as well as the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale. With the original\u2019s swift run-time of 83 minutes too, there\u2019s space for this to grow to 109 minutes without too much unnecessary ornamentation.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest change comes in the form of Andrew Burnap\u2019s Jonathan, replacing the 1937 Snow White\u2019s officially nameless prince that Snow wishes over the well will \u2018someday come\u2019 to sweep her off to his castle (there\u2019s none of that sighing and swooning here).<\/p>\n<section class=\"metro-comment-cta\">\n<div class=\"metro-comment-cta__inner\"><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text-wrap\"><title>Comment now<\/title><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text\">Are you looking forward to watching Snow White?<\/span><\/span><a class=\"metro-comment-cta__button\" href=\"#metro-comments-container\">Comment Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"271\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22678184 lazyload\" alt=\"Lightened Snow White Stills\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.isshicare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_242726811-80be.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>Leading lady Rachel Zegler as Snow White is the film’s unquestionable ace, despite the backlash she’s faced (Picture: Disney)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Instead, Jonathan is a charming bandit, slightly shamelessly ripped from the pages of Disney\u2019s Tangled and Flynn Rider \u2013 but as one of their most engaging male fairy tale leads, I won\u2019t quibble.
