Danny Dyer<\/a>\u2019s bold new film has raised eyebrows among one of his biggest fanbases with reported walkouts over its graphic nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Marching Powder sees Dyer star as Jack Jones, an ageing, drug-taking football hooligan who\u2019s arrested after violent matchday exploits and given six weeks to turn his life around \u2013 or else face prison.<\/p>\n

Sold as an \u2018outrageous comedy<\/a> about addiction, violence and happy endings\u2019, with romance and violence (\u2018but this ain\u2019t no rom-com\u2019, it insists), the movie nonetheless appears to have taken some by surprise.<\/p>\n

After the film released in cinema on Friday, people have been heading out to see it.<\/p>\n

As fan Liam shared on X: \u2018Went to watch that new Danny Dyer film<\/a> Marching Powder. The funniest thing that happened was an elderly couple who clearly didn\u2019t know what they were getting themselves into got up to leave after 20 minutes and the woman said to her husband \u201cWell he\u2019s not like that on EastEnders\u201d.\u2019<\/p>\n

Whether or not this particular walkout actually took place, it is true that Dyer\u2019s character of Jack is worlds away from that of Mick Carter, the kind and patriotic family man and landlord of the Queen Vic pub he played on EastEnders<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So people who\u2019ve only become aware of him since he was beamed into their televisions several nights a week during prime time will be quite surprised to see him sniffing copious amounts of coke, let his young son watch porn and drop a constant stream of C-bombs, right from the off.<\/p>\n

Dyer, 47, played Mick on EastEnders from 2013 until 2022<\/a>, garnering awards and fans alike for his popular turn \u2013 but he was actually attracted to the soap role because it was different to how he had been cast before.<\/p>\n

The Football Factory director Nick Love, and that 2004 film \u2013 in which he played a violent Chelsea fan \u2013 is what set Dyer on a path of regularly playing hard men.<\/p>\n<p>In his latest film, Dyer\u2019s character Jack is trying to fix his relationship with his long-suffering wife Dani (Stephanie Leonidas), while also be a better, more available parent to his son JJ (played by <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/05\/danny-dyer-forced-cast-son-film-no-kid-it-22671358\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dyer\u2019s real-life 11-year-old son Arty<\/a>).<\/p>\n<section class=\"metro-comment-cta\">\n<div class=\"metro-comment-cta__inner\"><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text-wrap\"><title>Comment now<\/title><span Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>But Marching Powder is not shy about leaning into profanities and its distinctly NSFW nature, even getting in within seconds of the film\u2019s start in its narration: \u2018In the simple old days when a c**k belonged to a man and a c**t to a woman.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also a title card reused that refers to a more upmarket neighbourhood as \u2018somewhere sitting in Gary Glitter\u2019s lap\u2019.  <\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/tv\/33753048\/danny-dyer-swearing-marching-powder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Sun<\/a>, which claims to have counted all of the swearing in the film, it has ‘229 rude words, including 159 F-bombs and 45 C-words’, which sounds pretty accurate.<\/p>\n<p>I could go on \u2013 but yes, Dyer\u2019s EastEnders fan base, or those who enjoyed him as sweet tech whizz <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/10\/21\/couldnt-peel-eyes-off-jilly-coopers-rivals-one-reason-21837515\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freddie Jones on Disney Plus\u2019s Jilly Cooper TV adaptation Rivals<\/a> \u2013 will likely will be shocked, it\u2019s safe to say.<\/p>\n<p>Reactions so far to the film have been mixed, while critics didn\u2019t hold back.<\/p>\n<figure this movie and its mannered, sub-Guy Ritchie style\u2019 in a one-star review, Little White Lies complained: \u2018Not even Dyer\u2019s boyish charm and undeniable screen presence \u2013 when he does manage to recapture the raw intensity that made him a star in the first place \u2013 can redeem Love\u2019s rancid script.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Fans who\u2019ve already been to the cinema to see it have also been sharing their thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Exactly what you expect from a Danny Dyer film,\u2019 viewer Craig Ewen shared on X. \u2018Entertaining and some good laughs but never delivers on the promise it has. Standard football hooligan film which at least laughs at itself.
